New Perspectives in Nigeria: Detechgene’s Journey with WIN.NRW Africa

As part of the WIN NRW.Africa initiative—organized by the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Industry, Climate Protection and Energy of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia and implemented by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ)—Detechgene had the unique opportunity to immerse itself in one of Africa’s most dynamic innovation ecosystems: Nigeria.

The program is designed to connect startups from North Rhine-Westphalia and Nigeria, enabling them to explore new markets, build partnerships, and gain first-hand insights into local business environments. Nigeria, particularly its economic hub Lagos, has emerged as a key innovation center in Africa, offering vast potential for international collaboration and technological growth .

Exploring Market Realities Beyond the Business Plan

For Detechgene, the goal of the delegation was clear: to develop a deep understanding of Nigeria’s diagnostic landscape. This included identifying unmet needs, analyzing healthcare structures, and exploring how mobile molecular diagnostics could contribute to improved access and faster decision-making in clinical settings.

Programs like WIN NRW.Africa are especially valuable for early-stage companies, as they provide a “reality check” on international expansion—something that cannot be replicated through desk research alone. • Startup Ecosystem: Exchanges with Nigerian founders enabled discussions around joint projects and co-creation opportunities—an essential element of the program’s long-term vision to foster bilateral innovation.
• Industry Leaders:
  • At BASF, discussions focused on sustainability initiatives and innovative approaches such as food fortification to combat malnutrition in remote regions.
  • At Beiersdorf Nigeria, the delegation gained insights into localized product development and regional manufacturing strategies.
• Diplomatic Exchange: Engagements with representatives from the Nigerian Consulate highlighted the strategic importance of German–Nigerian cooperation and opened doors for future partnerships.

These interactions reflect a broader trend: German-Nigerian cooperation is intensifying across multiple sectors—from healthcare and energy to innovation and trade—supported by initiatives led by GIZ and other international partners .
