New Perspectives in Nigeria: Detechgene’s Journey with WIN.NRW Africa
As part of the WIN NRW.Africa initiative—organized by the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Industry, Climate Protection and Energy of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia and implemented by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ)—Detechgene had the unique opportunity to immerse itself in one of Africa’s most dynamic innovation ecosystems: Nigeria.
The program is designed to connect startups from North Rhine-Westphalia and Nigeria, enabling them to explore new markets, build partnerships, and gain first-hand insights into local business environments. Nigeria, particularly its economic hub Lagos, has emerged as a key innovation center in Africa, offering vast potential for international collaboration and technological growth .
Exploring Market Realities Beyond the Business Plan
For Detechgene, the goal of the delegation was clear: to develop a deep understanding of Nigeria’s diagnostic landscape. This included identifying unmet needs, analyzing healthcare structures, and exploring how mobile molecular diagnostics could contribute to improved access and faster decision-making in clinical settings.
Programs like WIN NRW.Africa are especially valuable for early-stage companies, as they provide a “reality check” on international expansion—something that cannot be replicated through desk research alone. Direct exposure to regulatory frameworks, healthcare systems, and local stakeholders enables startups to make informed strategic decisions early on .
On the Ground: A Month of Learning and Exchange
Representing Detechgene, Kai Wangeringel spent four weeks in Nigeria, engaging with a wide range of stakeholders across the innovation and healthcare ecosystem. His experience reflects a central strength of the program: meaningful, hands-on exchange.
Beyond technical insights, one key takeaway was the openness and entrepreneurial spirit of the Nigerian ecosystem. As highlighted in interviews with participating startups, local partners show strong interest in collaboration with German companies and are highly engaged in building sustainable business relationships .
Key Visits and Strategic Insights
Throughout the delegation, a series of high-level visits and exchanges provided valuable perspectives:
- Government & Institutions: Meetings with organizations such as the Lagos Internal Revenue Service and the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry offered a deeper understanding of regulatory frameworks and Nigeria’s rapidly evolving startup landscape.
- Startup Ecosystem: Exchanges with Nigerian founders enabled discussions around joint projects and co-creation opportunities—an essential element of the program’s long-term vision to foster bilateral innovation.
- Industry Leaders:
- At BASF, discussions focused on sustainability initiatives and innovative approaches such as food fortification to combat malnutrition in remote regions.
- At Beiersdorf Nigeria, the delegation gained insights into localized product development and regional manufacturing strategies.
- Diplomatic Exchange: Engagements with representatives from the Nigerian Consulate highlighted the strategic importance of German–Nigerian cooperation and opened doors for future partnerships.
These interactions reflect a broader trend: German-Nigerian cooperation is intensifying across multiple sectors—from healthcare and energy to innovation and trade—supported by initiatives led by GIZ and other international partners .
Nigeria as a Market of the Future
Nigeria is not only Africa’s most populous country but also one of its fastest-growing innovation ecosystems. With a large, young population and increasing demand for healthcare solutions, the country presents significant opportunities—particularly for scalable, affordable technologies like mobile diagnostics.
Programs such as WIN NRW.Africa aim to strengthen long-term economic ties and create sustainable partnerships between both regions. The exchange of knowledge, technology, and entrepreneurial experience is seen as a key driver for innovation and growth on both sides .
Beyond Business: A Transformational Experience
The delegation was more than just a market exploration—it was a transformative experience on both a professional and personal level.
From navigating regulatory landscapes to building relationships with healthcare professionals and policymakers, the trip provided invaluable insights that will shape Detechgene’s future strategy. At the same time, it highlighted the importance of cultural understanding, trust-building, and local collaboration when entering new markets.
The strong support from local partners and facilitators played a crucial role in enabling meaningful connections and ensuring a successful stay.
Looking Ahead: Building the Future Together
The journey to Nigeria marks an important milestone in Detechgene’s internationalization strategy. The insights gained, partnerships initiated, and opportunities identified lay the foundation for future projects and potential market entry in Africa.
As the global demand for decentralized, rapid diagnostic solutions continues to grow, collaborations like these will be essential in addressing healthcare challenges where they matter most.
Detechgene is excited to continue this journey—together with its partners in Nigeria—and to contribute to building resilient, accessible healthcare systems through innovation.
